Hello! My name is Sarah. I am a U.S.-born visual artist currently based in Barcelona with a special place in my heart for New York City.
With a foundation in drawing and painting, I also work with sculpture, photography, video, and printmaking. Using these multiple mediums, I like to work abstractly and my work references the body and psychological or mental experiences in relation to both natural and architectural forms, yet hovers somewhere in between these two radically different environments. I tend to work in a minimal way- a sensibility I intentionally employ as a way of encouraging a viewer to be self-reflective. Currently, this serves a quiet protest against the polarization of ideas through media technologies and the soundbite nature of the disseminated of news and information.
These topics are informed by important personal experiences which include working on construction sites in cities (Portland, OR and NYC), as well as trail clearing and trekking in the wilds of the Kalmiopsis in Southern Oregon with the Siskiyou Mountain Club, hiking in knee-deep snow in Aigüestortes, a National Park in the Spanish Pyrenees, and hiking, sleeping, and dreaming (sometimes alone, sometimes with other pilgrims) on the magic of Montserrat Mountain in Catalonia outside of Barcelona.
In my studio practice, I am currently focusing on a series of drawings, collages, and artist books inspired by Montserrat. Considered a holy mountain by the locals, this unusual and special landscape is characterized by strange and alien rocky formations that do not appear elsewhere in the surrounding area. Abstract interpretations of these forms seem to be finding their way in my work!
